The Atlantic, October 2009 issue, has a letter written to President Bush by Andrew Sullivan that suggests a method of bringing some aspect of an honorable solution to the torture policies of his administration. The dishonor brought upon this country by these abhorrent practices cannot be healed so easily, but it would tend to be a balm for the moral and ethical laws set forth in the Constitution that have been transgressed. Correct actions and time will be the only proof to the world that America stands for ethical and moral liberty, but this suggested action for Bush recognizing his own war crimes would help in these efforts. No patriot can allow these illegal actions to be shoved into the dust bin of history without making known to the world that we do not accept any explanation that makes these actions correct or legal. Only recognizing the dishonor it has brought upon this country will help to right this wrong. I do not seek prosecution of President Bush or his cronies. History will exact it’s own retribution. Our country is not ready to bring the guilty to justice, but hopefully the majority will recognize the need for reform and a return to constitutional principles. |

The health care debate has usurped the entire governing process in the last several weeks. The rancor of the participants on both sides of the debate tends to indicate something more than just a concern about big government, ballooning national debt, and loss of choice. If the broad definition of racism is used to encompass the idea of believing that a superior group has the right to expect better health care than the masses, that might explain the cause of this furor. If you watch the town halls, the large majority of individuals that feel the most threatened are those that would fit into the description of WASP - White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. This group seems to feel that they are the true Americans and therefore should be exempt from any sacrifice that might raise the health care standards of the less worthy. This is a form of economic racism that dives into the very core of self interest and should be anathema to any true Christian. Sadly, where is the rebuke that should be proclaimed from every pulpit in the land? It seems that universal health care does not fit into the doctrines of Christian prosperity. The second great obstacle in providing universal health care is the fact that health care is big business and no one involved wants to give up a single cent of income to those unworthy of their sacrifice. Lobbying by the AMA, drug industry and insurance companies has created a monetary juggernaut that has ground the poor into a hole of purgatory of which they can never climb out without the help of the middle class citizens of America. Will that middle class ever forget self interest and become saviors of the less fortunate? Doubtful! President Obama has bitten off more that he can chew because he mistakenly believed in the goodness of the middle class citizens. He needs to revaluate his health care plan and remember the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. |
