Obama's Quagmire

The Obama administration has enough problems without sending more troops to Afghanistan.

There have to be better ways of solving the terrorist problems without sinking more of our human and economic wealth in a country that is impossible to control or govern.

Think about the fact that Afghanistan is about the size of Texas. It has more people and a more difficult terrain. Twenty-six percent of the population is 15 to 29 years of age - prime fighting age. There are six different ethno-linguistic divisions, but they are united against foreign invaders by the fact that 98% are of one religion - Islam. Warfare has been the national past-time for at least the last three thousands years; so what’s another 100 years to them? Does anyone in this country truly think we have the stomach to send the number of troops needed to have even a slight chance of success in 10 years? Remember hindsight has proven that we needed 500,000 boots on the ground in Iraq to be successful and Afghanistan will make Iraq look like a cake walk.

There are nine separate insurgent groups in the country that have been fighting among themselves for centuries and they only unite when invaded by a foreign power.

Why not just equally fund and equip each group and let them continue their dysfunctional family genocide?

It shouldn’t take a billion dollars to convince one of these groups to eliminate bin Laden and company. That is pocket change compared to what we will spend to just find out that this is just another misadventure.

You know the national character has been damaged when a discredited organization once again raises it’s ugly head and shakes it’s fist at the weak and down-trodden.

The Ku Klux Klan has been distributing literature in the Bloomburg area this week. I take offense, not because of the policies stated in the handout, but because it suggest that the citizens of my community are ignorant enough to respond to their call.

In the three page handout, one page list 25 policy statements that reflect the agenda of their organization. I admit that I agree with probably 20 out of the 25 points. No matter how logical these statements appear, the past history of the Klan would prevent any sound-minded person from seeking affiliation with such a xenophobic organization.

The cover page depicts the well known “White Knight” in hood and robe. The expected skull and cross bones appears at the bottom of the page. The skull has the appearance to be that of a smiling Negro. You might question that last sentence , but having lived in the “Old South” for 67 years, I know what it is suppose to represent. I have personally seen the Klan march around the square in Marshall, Texas and they are no civic organization.

The third page reads as if it was taken from the official Republican platform concerning illegal aliens. The innuendo and sentence phrasing would make Jesus Christ appear guilty of sedition and Dick Cheney proud.
