Book Review

Nothing To Be Frightened Of by Julian Barnes

Knopf publ., 244 pages, $24.95 , 2008

A delightful, thought provoking book that might require a second reading. The book is about life and death, with or without your approval.

A couple of quotes to make you realize this book is worth your time.

"When we fall in love, we hope - both egotistically and altruistically - that we shall be finally, truly seen: judged and approved."

"Wisdom consists partly in not pretending any more,..."

The author offers some interesting either/or questions that should challenge your thought processes.

Poor God

The descent of God from his place on high must be quite a shock. Going from Omni thru Father figure to Good Buddy must be irritating.

Actually it was our older brother who started this downfall when he thought he could lie to God and when that didn’t work blame everything on the woman. Then to make matters worse, she blamed it on the damn snake. It has all gone down hill from there.

It seems Michelangelo played a part in this process by showing God pointing down to Adam and other than size they seem fairly equal. Of course Michelangelo felt the need to cover God’s private parts, leaving us with the impression that maybe, like Bill Clinton, there was some imperfection. The other possibility was that he was protecting God from the Pope, who had the habit of breaking off private parts.

What caused me to have this epiphany, while watching 18 hours of football yesterday, was the nearly universal response of some 350 pound Goliath of Gath after decapitating a frail 240 pound quarterback pointing to heaven. Was he praising God for helping him kill David or was he pointing and saying, “I knew I would get him sooner or later?”

Nearly everyone thinks God is upset with Darwin for adding evolution to the creation, I don’t think so. It gives God some relief by leaving the impression that some of us are closer to the tree than others. Think about it. Most of those pointers to heaven haven’t figured out the cap bill goes to the front and pants are to cover those private parts and not just a place to stick a gun.

One of the big pointers to heaven is a guy who went to an expensive New York club last week in a sweat suit, hat on backwards and a 40 caliber Glock stuck in his waistband. As the story goes, he is sitting at a bar drinking with an illegal gun in his sweat pants. For a guy making thousands of dollars a minute for catching a football, this ain’t too smart. Does anyone you know think a sweatpants waistband is a good place to secure a 40 caliber Glock? Well duh, as the gun slides towards his private parts he makes a less than sure-handed catch and shoots himself in the thigh. Lucky guy! Does he point to heaven? I don’t think so. I suspect as he stands up and the gun and blood falls out of his pants leg he probably mutters, “Bonhomme, what have I done?” Well, I suspect you have lost millions of dollars due to stupidity and will spend the next 3 ½ years in Attica.

Of even greater pain to God is probably the uproar over homosexual marriage. Why would he care? Two homosexuals, with genetic traits that will prevent their continuation, getting married is frivolous compared to the rampant greed that is so perverse in the rest of his creation. In fact, homosexual marriage is probably just a Trojan horse to prevent the “saved” from facing a true universal flaw in their character. In other words, blame it on the snake.

Maybe it is time God rethinks this creation business and realizes that sub-prime is not no risk.
